MSI Computex 2010: Reducing the cost of Lucid Hydra

We've already briefly covered MSI's recent AMD 870 Hydra board, however we've now learned a little more. First up, the official name: the MSI 870A Fuzion.

There's also a price too: how does $180-200 suit your budget? MSI inferred that the Lucid Hydra chip costs more than Nvidia's NF200, but it preferred to use the Hydra 200 chip given the considerable effort already spent on developing motherboards for it.

$200 is still around 890FX prices, but MSI was adamant it is aiming the board at the "flagship mainstream" market below its 890FX products, such as the 890FXA-GD70.

The heatsinks aren't final by the way, but you might see some tweaks to the layout, such as the inward facing USB 3 port. MSI thinks that this orientation is a neater way to get USB 3 routed to the front of new cases.

In addition, MSI is preparing another P55 board called the P55A Fuzion, which will be far cheaper than its previous P55 Big Bang Fuzion, and it'll also get the staple USB3/SATA 6Gbps upgrade too.

Its OC Genie, like the rest of MSI's existing P55/H55 boards that feature it, will receive a BIOS upgrade to recognise and make use of the latest i5-655K and i7-875K CPUs with unlocked multipliers.

Why couldn't MSI source the HD5850m for the GT660 laptop?

On a laptop costing £1500 I would expect at least a HD5850m.

Regarding 1x PCIE lane, actually earlier today I just read a techpowerup article about how well the 5870 scales with different number of lanes, and it's actually quite surprising, I think the result was you get an average 25% hit to performance when running on 1x lane. Not bad huh?

With regards to external laptop graphics, if you need to be near a socket to use it, and you can't use the laptop's screen (as output from the graphics card), and for anything serious you'll need to plug a mouse into the laptop, and laptop keyboards are crap...

Why not just use the money you would have spent on the graphics card and caddy to buy a real computer?

I think the external GFX is for those that want to be able to have their lil lappy with them for the menial stuff and when they reach their destination be able to join in with mates when they play games. The reason why I think this is due to a friend bumming his ultra-portable Vaio but slaggin' it off whenever he's unable to play games when sat at a desk in someone's flat (mine).
